Chartered Master Technical Practitioner (ChMTP)

Historically, the Institute of Chartered Technical Practitioners has always encouraged its members to seek and attain higher levels of academic achievement and to raise their level of competence through attaining greater experience in the discipline of their choice. To date, the highest level that could be achieved in the Institute was that of Chartered Technical Practitioner.

However, the Executive Board of Directors has become aware that there are a number of its members who have achieved a much higher standard and experience than that required for the designation of Chartered Technical Practitioner and in order to give these members the recognition they deserve a new category has been created, namely, that of "Chartered Master Technical Practitioner".

This category of membership is open to individuals who hold a Masters Degree or a Doctoral Degree in any engineering, or technical or scientific field of study. These would include University Professors, Technical College Professors or Teachers/Instructors, Heads of Faculty, Departmental Heads and Heads of Industry and those involved in Scientific/Technical Research. To qualify for such a designation the candidate must meet the following criteria.

Education

Candidates must hold a valid 'PhD', or 'MASc.', or 'MSc.', or 'MEng' from an accredited Canadian University. Each candidate must provide adequate proof to the Examination Board (EB), as to the "degree" attained and the "grades" received for each subject to the satisfaction of the ICTPC Examination Board, whose decision will be deemed final.

Candidates who hold such degrees from non-Canadian Universities will be required to submit similar information to that furnished by "Canadian Universities" but with the additional requirements of full disclosure of the subject matter contained in each course taken, the "point basis" on which the degree was awarded, the years taken to cover each course taken and the syllabus for each course during those years of tuition. A Master Thesis/Technical Report may apply in some cases at a Masters level in proper format (double lined spacing) - able to support all claims that this would be their own research. The Examination Board will select the topic of the thesis.

In all cases, the "National Standard" of the Canadian Universities will be considered the minimum basis on which all applications will be considered.

Experience

Each candidate must have NO LESS THAN five years of work experience in ANY of the following areas: a) Engineering, or b) Teaching Technical/Scientific Subjects, or c) Research, or d) Technical Management, or any combination of these, deemed acceptable by the Examination Board.

Mature Candidate Route

Education

Candidates must hold a valid BASc., or BEng in NO LESS THAN TWO different disciplines from an accredited Canadian University, or equivalent to a recognized university / institution. Each candidate must provide adequate proof to the Examination Board, as to the degrees attained and grades received deemed acceptable by the Board. [See "Education from non-Canadian Universities" above].

Experience

Each candidate must have NO LESS THAN five years of work experience in each of the TWO disciplines [total ten years combined] in the following areas: a) Engineering, or b) Teaching, or c) Research, or d) Management, as deemed acceptable by the Examination Board. Candidates applying under the Mature Candidate Route must also submit to the Board of Examiners a MASTER THESIS/TECHNICAL REPORT at a Masters level in proper format (double lined spacing) - able to support all claims that this would be their own research. The Examination Board will select the topic of the thesis.
