Education
The designation ChTP shall be open to all new applicants applying to the Institute of Chartered Technical Practitioners of Canada (ICTPC). New applicants may make application to receive this designation. To receive the ChTP designation, new applicants must meet the following minimum criteria or equivalency:
A candidate must be a graduate of an approved four-year program in Engineering & Applied Science at an accredited Canadian University or of an equivalent course, at an accredited Non-Canadian University which meets or exceeds Canadian Standards.
Alternatively, the candidate could proffer a Bachelor of Science Degree in a Technical Discipline or a Bachelor of Applied Sciences Degree in a Technical Discipline.
All candidates must have gained an acceptable degree of mixed work experience in the applicants selected field or discipline.
In addition, each applicant shall agree to, and where necessary, provide the following:
- Show the ability to demonstrate competence in their field of specialization and practice.
- Abide by and follow the Institute's "Code of Ethics" and in general Be of Good Character.
- Proof of their technical contribution to industry/society by submission of Acceptable Authenticated Documents.
- Write and Pass the Institute's Ethics Examination, unless one has an Acceptable Ethics Examination Exemption from other accredited institutions/associations.
- Remain a member in good standing with the Institute by the prompt and timely payment of the designated fees/dues.
- Agree to maintain continuous self-improvement in their field through courses in his / her specialized fields of study.
- Be proficient in the English and or French languages, or approved ESL Equivalent Program.
- Specify their discipline of registration, and area of study.
- Each candidate shall have a minimum of 3 approved "Sponsors" who have worked directly with such individual/candidate, and can verify the individual's work experience, continuous improvement and ethical conduct etc. Sponsors such as direct managers and or supervisors may be acceptable. It is preferred that such Sponsors hold titles such as P.Eng., ing., CET, PE., or approved ChTP, etc..
Ineligibility
Please be advised, that the following candidates are NOT eligible for the designation of Chartered Technical Practitioner but could be considered for the designations of Technical Practitioner or that of Associate Technical Practitioner. - The candidate is a College Graduate of a two year Engineering Technician program at an Accredited Canadian College or of an equivalent program at an Accredited Non-Canadian College. The candidate can furnish proof of continuous improvement with a minimum of two (2) terms of Acceptable Hands-on work experience.
- The candidate has some academic education with extensive practical work experience in the discipline for which the application is made.
- The candidate has no formal education beyond that of Grade 12 in the Canadian High School, Education System whether or not the applicant can demonstrate he has received ten years or more of continuous Hands-on experience.
In all the cases described above, any applicant applying for membership in the Institute of Chartered Practitioners can be assured that the application will be dealt with in a confidential manner and the appraisal will be fair. The decision of the examination committee will be final.
Before applying for any specific designation the applicant is advised to check the required criteria for each and every membership designation before selecting. This way the applicant has less chance of being disappointed should the application for a specific designation fail to win the approval of the examination committee.
