A person may be accepted by examination administered by the Examination Committee of the Institute, or with the approval of the Executive. At the sole discretion of the Executive, the examination requirements may be waived in a particular case. At the time of admission, the applicant shall have at least two years work experience in design, research, construction or production of engineering products. The Applicant shall furnish such evidence of educational attainments and work experience that the Institute may require. Membership in the Institute entitles you to use the title of Technical Practitioner with the 'TecP' designation, receive a Certificate of Membership that can be prominently displayed in a place of business, a copy of the quarterly newsletter of the 'Journal', link to networking with peers and other professionals, attend conferences and training courses at reduced rates, and take advantage of professional growth opportunities.
All candidates within this category are encouraged to upgrade their skills and pursue certification to the Chartered Technical Practitioner 'ChTP' level.
Education
To be eligible for acceptance into the category of Technical Practitioner of the ICTPC, applicants must meet the following criteria and accept all other terms of membership.
- A Candidate must be a Graduate of an approved four (4) year Bachelor of Technology program at an accredited Canadian College or of an equivalent course, at an accredited Non-Canadian College which meets or exceeds Canadian Standards. This candidate must also have gained a minimum amount of Acceptable Practical Work Experience. [Please see the heading below Technical Practitioner Work Experience]
OR
- A Candidate must be a Graduate of an approved three (3) year Engineering Technology program at an accredited Canadian College or of an equivalent course at an accredited Non-Canadian College which meets or exceeds Canadian Standards. This candidate must also have gained a minimum amount of Acceptable Practical Work Experience. [Please see the heading below Technical Practitioner Work Experience]. Such Candidates might also be required to upgrade any educational deficiencies in order to be recognized as meeting the standards equivalent to the Bachelor of Technology programs. Upgrades are determined by the Board of Examiners of the Institute and such requirements will be evaluated on a one-to-one basis.
In addition, each applicant shall agree to, and where necessary, provide the following:
- Show the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the engineering principles in their specific field of specialization.
- Abide by and follow the Institute's "Code of Ethics"
- Proof of technical contribution to industry/society by submission of Acceptable Authenticated Documents.
- Write and Pass the Institute's Ethics Examination, unless one has an Acceptable Ethics Examination Exemption from other accredited institutions/associations.
- Remain a member in good standing with the Institute by the prompt and timely payment of the designated fees/dues.
- Agree to maintain continuous self-improvement in their field through courses in his / her specialized fields of study.
- Be of Good Character
- Be proficient in the English and or French languages, or approved ESL Equivalent Program.
- Specify their discipline of registration, and area of study.
- Each candidate shall have a minimum of 3 approved "Sponsors" who have worked directly with such individual/candidate, and can verify the individual's work experience, continuous improvement and ethical conduct etc. Sponsors such as direct managers and or supervisors may be acceptable.
Technical Practitioner - Work Experience
At the time of admission, the applicant shall have at least two years work experience in design, research, construction or production of engineering products or a specialized knowledge/training in a technical field. The Applicant shall furnish such evidence of work experience as the Institute may require. All applicants are assessed on a one-to-one basis where some or all of the examination requirements may be waived in a particular case. Please refer to the Exams Section for further clarification and requirements.

Technical Practitioner - Examination Fees (where/if applicable)
Candidates who are eligible for admission into the Technical Practitioner category may or may not have to write a Technical Report or write a Technical Examination. New candidates are assessed on a
one-to-one basis. However, All New Candidates who have been accepted as Technical Practitioners
MUST Write and Pass the Institute's Ethics Examination, unless one has an Acceptable Ethics Examination Exemption from other accredited institutions/associations. Where and if applicable, the following are the fee schedules for:
Textbooks/Course material is at additional cost pending the upgrade requirements.
Applicable Fees are payable at time of application and are NON REFUNDABLE. Please remit by Personal Cheque, Certified Cheque, Money Order or Money Gram made payable to the Institute of Chartered Technical Practitioners of Canada. Cash or credit card will not be accepted.
